“The 1st F-15I for Israel Air Force”

ST. LOUIS, November 6, 1997 – Boeing rolled out the first of 25 F-15Is for the Israel Air Force today. The ceremony marked an important milestone in a long, productive partnership between the company and the state of Israel.”
” “The F-15I is the product of unparalleled collaboration between Boeing, the U.S. Air Force and the Israel Air Force,” said Mike Sears, Boeing president of the McDonnell Aircraft and Missile Systems group. “Soon, the F-15I will take to the skies in protection of Israel’s peace. And when it does, its performance will be a dramatic testament to this team’s aggressive drive for perfection,” he said.”
“The two-seat F-15I, known as the Thunder in Israel, incorporates new and unique weapons, avionics, electronic warfare and communications capabilities. Israel selected the F-15I in January 1994 after evaluating a variety of aircraft to meet its defense needs. The F-15I, like the U.S. Air Force’s F-15E Strike Eagle, is a dual-role fighter that combines long-range interdiction with the Eagle’s awe-inspiring air superiority capabilities.”

“The F-15I is one of the most advanced fighters ever to be produced. Its avionics include the Hughes APG-70 synthetic aperture radar, the Kaiser holographic head-up display system, and an Elbit display and sight helmet (DASH) system. The aircraft is armed with a number of precision weapons systems, as well as Python and AMRAAM air-to-air missiles. Power is provided by two Pratt & Whitney F100-PW-229 low bypass turbofan engines, each capable of developing approximately 29,000 pounds of thrust.”
“The aircraft presented at today’s ceremony first flew on Sept. 12, 1997, on schedule. Since then, the aircraft has flown three times, and a variety of tests have been conducted to verify the plane’s systems and capabilities. The first two F-15Is are scheduled to be delivered to Israel in January 1998.”
“Boeing also is providing a software development facility for the F-15I, as well as support for the aircraft, operator and maintenance training, flight testing, and an industrial cooperation program. The F-15I industrial cooperation program currently involves 34 partners in Israel’s aerospace industry, working on contracts valued at more than half a billion dollars. The relationships continue a long-standing commitment to Israeli industry that dates back 30 years.”

The F-15I was selected to be Israel’s next frontline fighter aircraft in 1994, in a deal signed by the late prime minister Itzchak Rabin. Based on the F-15E, the I model was developed to fulfill Israeli requirements and incorporates Israeli avionics.

the first two F-15Is arrived in Israel on January 19th, 1998 to newly form the veteran “Patishim” (Hammers) squadron which in the past operated the B-17 and the F-4 Phantom II. The squadron began its training soon afterwards, the first inflight refueling from a Boeing 707 performed during March 1998. First intended to reach operational status in late 1998, training was stepped up following the February tension in the Persian Gulf and the squadron should be fully operational earlier than expected. The full order of battle, comprising of 25 aircraft, should be reached by the end of 1998.
the F-15Is have already participated in the various events commemorating Israel’s 50th anniversary such as the Independence Day airshow and should also take part in the events marking the 50th anniversary of the IAF, due to take place during the summer.

During October 1998, three F-15Is belonging to the IAF took part in the Red Flag 99-1 excercise at the USAF Nellis air force base in Nevada. The aircraft, which had arrived directly from the McDonnell Douglas production line in St. Louis were flown by Israeli pilots. Although the aircraft wore the 69th squadron emblems during the excercise, these were removed by the time these aircraft passed through Britain on their delivery flight to Israel.
The Patishim squadron was declared operational on January 1st 1999, and flew its first operational sortie on January 11th, when a pair of F-15Is attacked suspected terrorist targets in southern Lebanon using precision guided munitions. The Thunders have since participated in other attacks over Lebanon.
